JUST BREATHE

At the time of birth a treasure was given to all of us. But over a period of time, with so called development, we have forgotten about this treasure. And now, say, we are suddenly reminded of this treasure after many years…. how will we respond!!!!  Just think about this.

Dear co-travellers, BREATH is that treasure! It is a divine gift to all of us, but unfortunately, though it is always with us, we have forgotten the art of using it to fulfil the purpose of our life. We have been breathing for years.  But have we ever been consciously aware of it?

This reminds us of our tag line … Charaiveti Charaiveti … So long as breath is there, we are alive. It is just like the river flowing continuously 24 X 7. The day it stops, we die.

We hear elders, at the time of someone’s demise, mentioning that this particular person had only these many breaths in his name. Thus, learning to manage breath is the key. By using it judiciously we can take control of our total health.

There is a universally well-known fact –  Respiratory rate (Breaths/Min) is inversely proportional to the lifespan (longevity). Nature gives us many examples to prove this. Look at the dogs and cats; their respiratory rate is very high, almost 100 or more per minute. They live for hardly 10 to 15 years. On the other side, look at elephants / tortoises – their respiratory rates are low and they live for a long period (elephants for almost 200 years and tortoises much more).

LEARN FROM NATURE. This is what ‘use it judiciously’ means – use it just like we use our Fixed Deposits. Be miserly, be selfish (in a positive sense) with your breath.  Make time for your practices. Set your priorities. Prioritize your practices.

Dear friends,  it is now or never. Start taking care of your physical and mental health. How to start? Very simple. Just by paying attention to your breath.  Work on your inhalation (breathing in) and exhalation (breathing out) and see the miracle… Be aware of your breath and be grateful to divinity for this treasure.

It’s never too late friends. To begin with, here is a small exercise for all of us. For two minutes every two hours when awake, just watch your breath. Be a witness, be in SAKSHI BHAVA…  Let there be no manipulation of the breath cycle. Just be an observer.

As GURUDEV Swami Rama says,“Breath is the bridge between the internal and the external worlds”.  Easiest way to excel in both the worlds is by taking CHARGE of your breath.

Breath is the link between the conscious and unconscious minds. Between the present and the past. Flow of breath can decide the quality of our meditation. Breath is the link between the body and the mind. Though there are various practices which deal with prana, it is only  pranayama which directly affects the pranas. Over the next few blogs, I plan to share a few things, so that we all have a better understanding of the art and science of Breath (PRANA.)

very good article. educative. lot of benefits from doing daily pranayama. i remember our guruji keerthishesha pattabhirama use to say that we are living courtesy nature. air is passing through the body on its own and we are not breathing on our own. it is important to learn proper breathing.

Dr ji has reminded us of how forgetful we are with our eternal life companion, breath. Breath influences our overall well-being. I’m sure Dr ji will be sharing with us much more related to breath, including pranayama techniques, which will eventually help us to enter meditation. Breath is equally important in the practice of asanas too.

But for now, it is a good starting point to become aware of our breath. Let us all endeavour to achieve what our Sages are doing relentlessly – helping us to experience life in its entirety and free ourselves from all limitations and false projections.

    Jai Gurudev
